Meet Captain Courteney Landis

Overcoming adversity is often easier said than done. In a sport that often requires being tall, freshman Courteney Landis is typically the shortest player on the court, standing at 5-foot 3-inches.  
Landis is the starting point guard, and is the team captain on Linn-Benton’s women’s basketball team. Landis played hoops throughout her years at West Linn, and is a long-time athlete, beginning sports when she was four-years-old. She is a tri-sport athlete: playing basketball, gymnastics, and soccer.
In her sports career, Landis believes her biggest accomplishment is making it to the college level here at LBCC, because when she was in high school she went through a lot of injuries her senior year of high school she had to get shoulder surgery then in her first year at LBCC she had to get knee surgery which kept her out of basketball for a whole year. Through the injuries her parents have given inspiration to help her stay positive and get through it by working hard.  Her role on the team isn’t just the point guard or captain, but she is always there for everyone.


“I am always giving 110 percent on the court,” said Landis.


Hannah Creswick, a sophomore and a member of the team, describes Landis as the team’s motivator.
“She is the glue of our team,” said Creswick.
A skilled player, Landis doesn't face a lot of challenges, but she has one in particular:


“I am too much of a perfectionist, doing too many jobs and not minimizing it down to what I need to do,” said Landis.
Her ultimate goal, she says, is for the team to eventually make it to the championship game of the Northwest Athletic Conference Playoffs.


“You are your only limit,” said Landis. Through all the adversity of her previous injuries, family has taught her that her mind can always overcome whatever anyone states about her.  
“Every day I want to get better and exceed what my purpose is,” said Landis.
Landis takes inspiration from her father T.J, mother Jill, and Uncle Mike who have been supporting her throughout her life. She also takes inspiration from people saying she can’t when she wants to prove that she can.


“Effort is everything,” said Landis.

Courteney Landis graduated from West Linn high school the year of 2015 which makes her 20 years old. She is working towards a degree in business marketing her goals though after she is done with her two years on the basketball team she is going to help coach until she is done with her degree.

Topic 1: The best photo that I have taken would have been my Portraits of the baseball Co-Captains Spencer DesBiens and Caleb Smith. These Photos stood out because I was able to get really good lighting and with the shades being able clear faces. It reflects that I can be really good with a camera when I am in the field I love to be in. JN 217 Week 10 Blog Forum

My three goals for this term in JN 217 Feature writing Learning how to create a story with good sources through research and interviews. Whether it's human interaction or online research with reviews. Writing is one thing, but editing is another and I was able to do well with the basketball stories with help so I want to learn how to edit better when I go to work with the paper in the fall.  Interviewing I was able to do well there is always room for improvement though which is something I need.  Personally I didn't do as well for myself, but I am the person to always help others out if they are struggling.  So in learning all of these tips I was able to do well enough.  When i was writing my basketball stories last term that is when I got better learning how to edit though made my previous stories and future stories better.  I have always been good at talking to people interviewing I just got better at not being nervous for speaking to them.  I still need to work on my

Topic 1: Self Portrait Spencer Desbiens/ Caleb Smith Claim to fame: They are the team Co-Captains Outdoors on a sunny day Baseball bat, players, gloves Contact through coach, email, or text Self Critique My best photo would have to be the close up of the basketball player getting ready to take a jump shot even though the lighting in the gym sucks. My worst photo would have to be my week one photos because the lighting in the gym sucks and I didn't have the right lens with my camera for sports. The skill that I need to improve on is trying to expand the type of subjects I take instead of just one type like basketball.  Improving the quality of my photos will have to adjusting the focus to lineup the dot with the subject.
