JN 217 Week 10 Blog Forum

My three goals for this term in JN 217 Feature writing Learning how to create a story with good sources through research and interviews. Whether it's human interaction or online research with reviews. Writing is one thing, but editing is another and I was able to do well with the basketball stories with help so I want to learn how to edit better when I go to work with the paper in the fall.  Interviewing I was able to do well there is always room for improvement though which is something I need.  Personally I didn't do as well for myself, but I am the person to always help others out if they are struggling.  So in learning all of these tips I was able to do well enough.  When i was writing my basketball stories last term that is when I got better learning how to edit though made my previous stories and future stories better.  I have always been good at talking to people interviewing I just got better at not being nervous for speaking to them.  I still need to work on my

Topic 1: The best photo that I have taken would have been my Portraits of the baseball Co-Captains Spencer DesBiens and Caleb Smith. These Photos stood out because I was able to get really good lighting and with the shades being able clear faces. It reflects that I can be really good with a camera when I am in the field I love to be in. My photos skills have improved a lot considering that I have been able to help other students understand how their cameras work. Spencer DesBiens Caleb Smith Topic 2: Looking back on this term I have improved a lot with my skills as a photographer and a person dealing with the class I will be able to pass, but I wasn't able to get and A through the restrictions of life and and not being able to finish some of the assignments.  Also I wasn't able to contribute to the paper at all this term so I have made that a priority for next year I will contribute no matter what with the sports section.

Lynsey Addario Book Report

In the Lynsey Addario book "It's What I Do" I an able to relate to her sense of pursuing photojournalism in the war, because it is something she loves to take photos of.  The main reason is I love to take sport photos which is what I love, also she has to isolate her feelings from her subjects and the situation.  Addario is very unique when it comes to capturing the realistic moment with the faces of the subject and willing to get up close and capable of getting different angles. I wasn't able to learn any new techniques, but I was able to get better at capturing angles and getting closer with my photos, With my baseball photos I was able to get closer which allowed me catch the ball quicker. One of my favorite pieces of her work from her website is with all the Syrian refugees walking in a line through the dessert .  I selected this one because it's showing how many people are trying to leave, but knowing they won't be able to, or waiting for a long time.

Topic 1: Self Portrait Spencer Desbiens/ Caleb Smith Claim to fame: They are the team Co-Captains Outdoors on a sunny day Baseball bat, players, gloves Contact through coach, email, or text Self Critique My best photo would have to be the close up of the basketball player getting ready to take a jump shot even though the lighting in the gym sucks. My worst photo would have to be my week one photos because the lighting in the gym sucks and I didn't have the right lens with my camera for sports. The skill that I need to improve on is trying to expand the type of subjects I take instead of just one type like basketball.  Improving the quality of my photos will have to adjusting the focus to lineup the dot with the subject.

JN 134 Week 6 Forum

Topic 1: I am going to photograph my hometown of Albany Oregon.  I have lived here for 21 years and I know a lot of people and I know my way around town. Portrait: person working at a shop or store  Landmark:  Something Compelling  Activity:  People playing a sport of some kind The photo of the portrait is going to be the most difficult because I have to talk to someone and get permission to take a photo of them. Topic 2: Who? Boy Scout  What? They are working on their Eagle Scout project. Where? At the project site and at the location of where the troop meets. When? The days of the project and troop meeting nights. Why? I chose this person because I grew up doing Boy Scouts and I am an Eagle Scout also it is my old Troop. I would go at documenting the project. the person who is doing the project, which troop they came from and why they chose this Eagle project.

Topic 1: Tip 1: The most difficult part in taking photos is when the frisbee is coming towards you and getting the depth right so everything is in focus.  Tip 2: Also when you are shooting the action shot always make sure you get their faces and names.  Using the right aperture to make that I get the singular subject, or the surrounding area in focus to get the full explanation of the photo.  Also when it comes to names get to know the players by going to practices so they don't think you are creepy so you can also interview them. Topic 2:   Baseball Team practice  Outside on the Baseball Field  Overall:  Players on the field warming up  Medium: Players practicing at bat Close up: Catcher at the mound receiving the ball

Topic 1: My photographer of the week:  Is Bob Martin a sports photographer who has photographed many huge sporting events the one he is known for is the Olympics both summer and winter.  He has many cover photos for the well known Sports Illustrated.  Taking all these great photos has allowed him to climb up in winning 57 international awards. What stands out to me about Bob's photos is the great angles he gets and how he is able to really capture the moment or the perfect movement of each of the athletes. Bob Martin's "Claim to Fame." because he has shot the Summer and Winter Olympics over and over again. My two suggestions that I think are the most doable are, "Watch the calendar" to get the most recent events so I can prepare myself ahead of time and so everything is ready for that date.  Also "Just taking time to stop."  if I just time to stop and observe the area I will be able to fine that great photo by also taking different approaches

Spring time Training for LBCC Women's Basketball

Swish! is the sound you hear when the ball hits the net, and nobody else is in there except you.   That is what I heard around 3 o'clock when I looked in there I saw one of the women from Linn-Benton's basketball team they were shooting using the shooting machine which is a high tech machine that lets you spot up and then it spits out a basketball every few seconds.   When 4 o'clock rolled around I started seeing other players show up previous players from the team and players trying out for the team.  Coach Harold came in and said 'Today we are going to do some 3 on 3 and 5 on 5 to get everyone in the flow again."  That is exactly what they did it felt like a regular basketball class except with the coach teaching the class and you actually get something out of it. After they divided up the players into teams they just played until time ran out and then you switched courts.  During the first game I went over to Coach and asked her about the new player they ar

About ME:  I love sports playing and watching them.   My favorite is basketball, but football is right there with it.  I am 21 years old, when I was born I was born with Erb's Palsy which has restricted me from playing the sports I love the most.  However that has not made me different for what I want to do which is become a sports broadcaster for my career so my major is going to be in journalism and communications.  I am taking this class to get me one step closer to my career, through retaking this class it will help me understand more about journalism. Goals:  My first goal is to be the best I can even if that means getting a photo into the paper and working with the camera constantly trying to understand how everything works with photoshop more.  My second Goal is to get an A in this class to continue with this path that I am paving.  Finally I am trying to show to brother and sister that I have changed, because I used to be lazy in high school and now my brother is doing th

Hannah Creswick making a shot over multiple Clark defenders, adding to her 19-point total. Photo by Josh Knight The Roadrunners picked up a big win against the Clark Penguins which has them heading into the Northwest Athletic Conference (NWAC) tournament in fourth place. The site for this game was at the Linn-Benton Activities Center on Saturday, March 4. Linn-Benton’s Roadrunners (8-7) played the Clark Penguins (4-11) in a game that was out of control but surprisingly close in the end, with the final score being 70-57, and boosting the Roadrunners to the playoffs. The score heavily favored Linn-Benton at the end of the first quarter, leading 32-8, but in the second quarter mellowed out with them only outscoring Clark by one point, resulting in a 46-21 lead at halftime. Starting the third quarter, the game picked back up and Clark went on a 10-0 run, trimming the lead down to 15 points before Linn-Benton called a timeout. After the timeout the Roadrunners were a

Meet Captain Courteney Landis

Image
Courteney Landis fends off  Clark defender going for the ball. Photo by Josh Knight Overcoming adversity is often easier said than done. In a sport that often requires being tall, freshman Courteney Landis is typically the shortest player on the court, standing at 5-foot 3-inches.   Landis is the starting point guard, and is the team captain on Linn-Benton’s women’s basketball team. Landis played hoops throughout her years at West Linn, and is a long-time athlete, beginning sports when she was four-years-old. She is a tri-sport athlete: playing basketball, gymnastics, and soccer. In her sports career, Landis believes her biggest accomplishment is making it to the college level here at LBCC, because when she was in high school she went through a lot of injuries her senior year of high school she had to get shoulder surgery then in her first year at LBCC she had to get knee surgery which kept her out of basketball for a whole year. Through the injuries her parents ha

Battle of Wills Lane defeats LBCC Women; 81-75

Title: Battle of Wills Deck: LB Women's basketball lose to Lane Linn-Benton’s Activity Center was the site of a hard-fought battle for second place in the Northwest Athletic Conference (NWAC) women’s standings on Jan. 25. Linn-Benton Roadrunners (4-2) played the Lane Titans (4-1) in a game that proved both these teams were deserving of a top seed, but Lane was more deserving narrowing out the win 81-75 due to the scoring of Sarah Hall who had 29 points and Sierra Carrier who had 22 points and 12 rebounds . The score was 42-33 in favor of the Titans at halftime, where they outscored Linn- Benton 25-14 in the second quarter.   Starting the third quarter, the crowd was getting into the game. The Roadrunners were able to get back into the game by hitting three pointers from Jade Bevandich , who finished the game with 15 points. “The team is coming along really well we keep improving every game,” said Bevandich. They also got a healthy amount of point produ

Charging Back, But not enough

Linn Benton and Chemeketa come out of half with the score being 42-34 in favor of the Storm.  The teams were going back and forth trading buckets until the 10 minute mark of the half Chemeketa Storm hit 3 3's in a row to bring the score to 66-51 .  The crowd started to fall out of the game then Brodie Marchant hit a 3 pointer to start a 15-2 run, and the Roadrunners were making it a game. This run brought the crowd on its feet and screaming and cheering as the Storm called a timeout the lead was trimmed to 2 being 68-66 in favor of the Storm with about 5 minutes left in the game.  After the timeout though it all went downhill the Chemeketa Storm went on a tear with hitting 3's, 6 of there last 7 and Linn Benton couldn't score at all only 11 points in the last 5 minutes and giving up 24 and turning it over 6 times.  The 15-2 comeback fell short after losing 92-77 as the last buzzer sounded.  The Chemeketa Storm had two outstanding scorer's Brennen McNabb (29 points)
